Toelichting
In september 2012 werd de catastrofe van Smyrna (Izmir) herdacht, die 90 jaar geleden plaatsvond, waarbij destijds een groot deel van de stad, toen de tweede stad in het Ottomaanse Rijk, door brand werd verwoest, vier dagen nadat het Turkse leger de stad had bezet. De ramp, een onderdeel van de laatste fase van de Armeense genocide, betekende het einde van de sterke christelijke aanwezigheid in de historische Egeïsche kustregio’s en deed honderdduizenden Grieken en Armeniërs op de vlucht slaan.

In deze geïllustreerde lezing zal prof. Richard Hovannisian spreken over de belangrijke rol van Smyrna (het huidige Izmir) in de moderne Armeense geschiedenis en het inferno dat de stad overspoelde in september 1922. Hovannisian is de redacteur van het book “Armenian Smyrna / Izmir”, deel elf van de serie naar aanleiding van de conferentie aan de Universtiteit van California (UCLA) “Historic Armenian Cities and Provinces.” Hij reisde ook naar Izmir en omstreken in juni 2012 als de historicus-gids.

Professor Hovannisian was de eerste houder van de leerstoel van “Armenian Educational Foundation” bij de Moderne Armeense Geschiedenis aan de UCLA en is momenteel als Distinguished Chancellor’s Fellow verbonden aan de Chapman University in Orange County. Hij is de auteur van Armenia on the Road to Independence, de vier-delige geschiedenis ‘The Republic of Armenia’ en heeft bewerkt en heeft bijgedragen aan meer dan vijfentwintig boeken, waaronder’ The Armenian Genocide in Perspective’, ‘The Armenian People from Ancient to Modern Times’, ‘Remembrance and Denial’, ‘Looking Backward, Moving Forward’ en ‘The Armenian Genocide: Cultural and Ethical Legacies’.

Deze lezing vindt om 13.30 uur plaats in de Gulbenkianzaal van de Armeense Kerk van Almelo.

September 2012 marked the 90th anniversary of the Smyrna Catastrophe when much of the city, the second largest in the Ottoman Empire, was destroyed by fire four days after the Turkish army had occupied the city. The calamity, a part of the final phase of the Armenian Genocide, marked the end of a strong Christian presence in the historic Aegean coastal regions and turned hundreds of thousands of Greeks and Armenians into refugees.

In this illustrated lecture, Prof. Richard Hovannisian will discuss the important role of Smyrna (Izmir) in modern Armenian history and the inferno that engulfed the city in September 1922. Hovannisian is the editor of Armenian Smyrna/Izmir, the eleventh volume of proceedings from the UCLA conference series “Historic Armenian Cities and Provinces.” He also traveled to Izmir and environs in June 2012 as the historian-guide.

Professor Hovannisian was the first holder of the Armenian Educational Foundation Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA and currently serves as Distinguished Chancellor’s Fellow at Chapman University in Orange County. He is the author of Armenia on the Road to Independence, the four-volume history The Republic of Armenia, and has edited and contributed to more than twenty-five books including ‘The Armenian Genocide in Perspective’, ‘The Armenian People from Ancient to Modern Times’, ‘Remembrance and Denial’, ‘Looking Backward, Moving Forward’ and ‘The Armenian Genocide: Cultural and Ethical Legacies’.

2012 թ. սեպտեմբերին լրացավ Զմյուռնիայի աղետի 90-ամյակը, երբ Օսմանյան կայսրության երկրորդ խոշորագույն քաղաքը մեծ մասամբ ավերվեց հրդեհի հետևանքով, ընդամենը չորս օր թուրքական բանակի կողմից քաղաքի գրավումից հետո: Այս աղետը, որ հայոց ցեղասպանության վերջնական փուլի մի մասն էր կազմում, նշանավորեց նրանով, որ վերջ տվեց պատմական Էգեյան ափամերձ շրջաններում հզոր քրիստոնեական ներկայությանը և փախուստի մատնեց հարյուր հազարավոր հույների եւ հայերի:

Պատկերներով հարուստ այս դասախոսության ընթացքում պրոֆեսոր Ռիչարդ Հովհաննիսյանը կքննարկի Զմյուռնիայի (Իզմիր) կարևոր դերը ժամանակակից հայոց պատմության մեջ և այն դժոխային հրդեհը, որ կործանեց քաղաքը 1922 թ. սեպտեմբերին: Հովհաննիսյանը խմբագիրն է Հայկական Զմյուռնիա / Իզմիր աշխատության, որը կազմում է Լոս Անջելեսի Կալիֆորնիա համալսարանի «Պատմական Հայաստանի քաղաքներն ու գավառները» գիտաժողովներ շարքի հրատարակումների տասնմեկերորդ հատորը: Նա նաև ճամբորդել է Իզմիր և եղել շրջակա վայրերում 2012 թ. որպես պատմաբան և ուղեցույց:

Պրոֆեսոր Հովհաննիսյանը Կալիֆորնիայի UCLA համալսարանի Հայկական կրթական հաստատության Հայ ժողովրդի արդի պատմության ամբիոնի առաջին վարիչն էր: Նա հեղինակ է «Հայաստանի Անկախության ճանապարհին», քառահատոր պատմություն «Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն», և խմբագրվել ու նպաստել է ավելի քան քսանհինգ գրքեր, այդ թվում ` «Հայոց ցեղասպանության հեռանկարը», «Հայ ժողովուրդը հնագույն ժամանակներից մինչև մեր օրերը», «Ոգեկոչում և ժխտում» . «Հետ նայել, առաջ շարժվել» և «Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը` մշակութային եւ էթիկական ժառանգություններ»:

Հոլանդիայի ՀԲԸՄ մասնաճյուղը կազմակերպել է պրոֆեսոր Ռիչարդ Հովհաննիսյանի դասախոսությունը «Պատմական Արևմտյան Հայաստանը» թեմայով, որտեղ կներկայացվեն Տիգրանակերտի վերջին հայերի և Սև Ծովի ափերում բնակվող հայախոս համշենահայերի հետ հարցազրույցներ: Այս միջոցառումը տեղի կունենա ս.թ. մայիսի 11-ին, ժամը 13.30-ին Ալմելո քաղաքի հայկական եկեղեցու «Գուլբենկյան» սրահում:
